Kapaa Shopping Center first opened for business in the 1960s in the foreground of Kahili Mountain under the auspices of Kahili Development Company owned by NF Kawakami Store, Ltd., Commercial Properties, Ltd., M. Furugen family, and Antone Vidinha. At that time, and currently, Kapaa Shopping Center's main store was Big Save Value Center, a full-service grocery store. Kapaa Shopping Center provided an easily accessible gathering place for locals to shop and participate in community events. Residents fondly remember attending annual Easter egg hunts and concerts throughout the years. Today, Kapaa Shopping Center hosts community organization's fundraisers and remains a hub for local shopping and conveniences.
